Number one, being a benefits consultant (should) mean that you're not tying your revenue to the sale of a product. You're tying your revenue to advisory services and results.

Number two, benefits consulting should use a formal discovery process to understand their client’s current state and desired future state.

Effective discovery processes use data to quantify the value-equation and current state of a benefits program.

This is hugely important because making product or strategy recommendations without discovery is essentially malpractice (yikes).
