We could all learn a few things from Rolling Stones drummer, Charlie Watts, who celebrated his 80th birthday June 2nd, 2021.
1. Selflessness – like any good leader, Charlie is a servant to the mission (song) of the organization. In 50 years, we’ve never heard Charlie put his ego ahead of the song — and it shows.
2. Strategy Over Activity – how can one person be so effective and make it look so effortless? Strategy. Charlie crafts his parts strategically for maximum impact, and by doing this, is able to say more with less.
3. Discipline – most people find it difficult working into their 70’s, let alone touring with the World’s greatest rock band for 50+ years. Although there’s temptation around every corner, Charlie has the discipline to take care of his body and mind so that he can perform at the top of his game each night and give the fans what they deserve.
4. Have Fun – if you’re not having fun, you’re probably doing it wrong. Mistakes are inevitable, and Charlie never loses sight of the fact that his fans (clients) are there to have a good time — not get mad about the fact that Keith messed up the intro.
